Bobby Brown and Mike Tyson reveal the strength of their enduring friendship amidst shared tragedy. 💫 Don’t miss their touching story of support and resilience
Bobby Brown and Mike Tyson became friends long ago because they were both famous. But now, their friendship is even stronger because they’ve both experienced great sadness.
Bobby, who’s 55 and a singer, talked only to PEOPLE about Mike, who’s 57 and a boxer. Mike came to support Bobby at an event for a charity Bobby started in memory of his daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who died at 22. Bobby also lost his son, Bobby Brown Jr., who died when he was 28.
“We’ve known each other for a long time,” Bobby said about Mike. “We used to hang out a lot when Mike was starting his boxing career and I was starting my solo singing career.”
Their bond grew even tighter when both of them went through the pain of losing a child. Mike’s daughter, Exodus, died in 2009 when she was just 4 years old.
They’ve been there for each other through their grief. “Mike’s support means a lot,” said Bobby. “Having a friend who knows what it’s like to lose a child is really important to me.”
But they don’t talk about their losses much. “We try to avoid it,” Bobby said. “It’s always on our minds, but we try to focus on other things to keep each other feeling strong.”
They also support each other in their endeavors. This summer, Mike is going back into the boxing ring for the first time in years. He’ll be fighting Jake Paul, a younger guy who used to be known for his online videos. Bobby will be there to cheer Mike on. “He’s excited about it,” said Bobby. “I’ll be there to make sure he does well. Mike’s in great shape. I don’t think Jake Paul knows what he’s gotten himself into.”
