The deaf dog who took a bullet to protect his owner and ended up homeless has a second chance

He’s a great, older, hero dog and he deserves a forever home where he will be pampered and loved unconditionally.

The pit bull that bravely saved his owner’s life and then wound up on the streets is now getting a second chance in the shape of a new home.

Kiko, who is now 14 years old, took a gunshot during a house invasion in 2012 for his owner when he had to relocate and was unable to take Kiko with him. Kiko was made homeless shortly after. Mighty Mutts, a dog rescue organization located in New York City, took Kiko in as a pet in 2014, and they’ve been searching for him the perfect home ever since.

We’ve all been extremely engaged with Kiko for the past 18 months, according to Mighty Mutts’ Jill Haynes, and it’s so great to see him find his forever home. Kiko needs a particularly particular kind of home because of his advanced age and hearing impairment.

A couple contacted Mighty Mutts after reading about Kiko on The Dodo because they were convinced they would make Kiko’s ideal family. On Thursday evening the couple came to get Kiko and finally take him to his expected home.

It’s clear that Kiko is ecstatic. On Thursday night, Kiko moved in with a great couple who are completely fascinated with him, as noted on the Mighty Mutts Facebook page. The Dodo’s story on him, which has been shared hundreds of times, convinced them he was the best dog for them.

As Kiko was searching for his permanent home, Casey Ryan, his foster mother, proved to be a genuine hero. To care for the rescued pets, Mighty Mutts uses foster families. In her final statement to The Dodo, before Kiko was adopted, Casey said, “He’s a fantastic, elderly, hero dog and he deserves a permanent home where he will be cherished and loved completely.”

Mighty Mutts is always on the lookout for foster homes in New York City to care for its dedicated pets while they wait to find their forever homes.
