At the BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas, the chances of winning over an 11-month-old puppy’s trust in people are fading. Two weeks after being rescued, Scarlett’s foster parents have come to the conclusion that they are ill-equipped to care for a dog who is so afraid and emotionally shut off.
On May 10, 2023, Scarlett was found as a stray, weighing 45 pounds, and was determined to be a Labrador retriever mix. She first withdrew to a spot in the shelter, refused food, and shook at the sight of people.
On May 15, the dog was supposed to be put down, but a BARC foster intervened just in time to save her.
Sadly, Scarlett has been brought back to the shelter. She just does not know that decent people exist, thus it is not her fault. An experienced foster parent who can nurture animals like Scarlett is desperately needed.
