Today Nyakim is a well-known model almost all over the world. She is popular, in demand, and satisfied with herself. But this was not always the case: Gatwech’s childhood and early years were not easy.

Nyakim was born in South Sudan in 1993. And when military conflicts began in this country, the family moved to Kenya. Until the age of 14, Gatwech lived in an Ethiopian camp for homeless refugees. But then, together with her family, the girl moved to American Minneapolis, where she still lives.

From childhood, Nyakim faced attacks from peers who considered the girl an “ugly duckling” because of her not very attractive appearance. But if few people were surprised by the unique dark skin color in their native Africa, then in the USA it became a real problem for Gatwech. Her classmates laughed at her, she was constantly bullied and insulted. But she survived those hardships.
At one time, Nyakim even wanted to lighten her skin. So did her sister, and it was she who dissuaded Gatwech from a rash act, which she herself regretted more than once. But over time, Nyakim learned not only to accept herself but also to use her peculiarity.
The path to fame began for Nyakim with shows of the creations of budding designers, among whom was her friend. And in 2017, the dark-skinned spectacular beauty shone on the posters of the next part of the “Saw” thriller.

Then Gatwech began to create a portfolio and very soon she was able to become famous: she was increasingly approached by modeling agents, and she appeared at shows, in advertising campaigns, and on the covers of glossy magazines. So a simple dark-skinned African woman has become a real star, collaborating with many well-known brands of clothing and cosmetics. She also became a Guinness World Record holder.

Now more than 970 people from all over the world have subscribed to the Gatwech Instagram account. She is admired, her fate is being watched. And she is sure that no person should suffer because of the color of the skin and any other features of appearance. Nyakim is convinced that you need to accept and love yourself. Once a taxi driver asked her if she was ready to change her skin tone for 10 thousand dollars. But she laughed and said that even if the light color made her life easier, she would still choose the difficult path that she is going through in life.
By the way, Nyakim honors African traditions and often chooses outfits decorated with Ethiopian ornaments. And she advises all African women not to let the stereotypes that exist in other countries break their will and lower their self-esteem.
