Twenty-six years ago this December, the movie Titanic was released. This week, never-before-seen pictures from the movie’s set were revealed. They are going up for auction next month in the U.K. at Henry Aldridge & Son.
The photos were taken in 1996 in Rosarito, Mexico, by an unidentified crew member. They show the famous cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Kathy Bates, working with director James Cameron.
These pictures used to be owned by a British collector who gave them to Henry Aldridge & Son.
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said, “What’s special about these photos is that they were taken by a crew member using their own camera. They aren’t professional, promotional photos. They are candid, amateur shots.” The estimated price for these photos before the auction is around $1,800.
Here are the photos for the first time:
1. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, also known as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt, took a break on the Titanic set in Mexico in 1996.
2. DiCaprio was only 21 when they filmed the movie. He said, “It became something that we could’ve never predicted.”
3. A model of the Titanic ship was supported by scaffolding that was not seen in the film.
4. Francis Fisher, who played Ruth Dewitt Bukater, got a quick touch-up between scenes while Kate Winslet was in the background.
5. DiCaprio moved between filming locations during a day on set.
6. In one picture, director James Cameron was seen working with DiCaprio, who was wearing sunglasses.
7. Cameron remembered the funny meeting with Leo and his screen test. He said all the women in the office wanted to meet Leo.
8. The replica of the RMS Titanic built by Cameron’s crew for the movie was 90 percent the size of the original ship.
9. Kathy Bates, who played Molly Brown, posed for a photo with a fellow cast member.
10. Filming the opening scenes required many extras, but all eyes were on a well-dressed Kate Winslet.
