HBO and A24’s new show, “The Sympathizer,” has a trailer out. It’s about spying, secrets, and features Robert Downey Jr. playing four different characters.
The story is set in Vietnam in 1975, towards the end of the war. It follows a North Vietnamese spy named Captain, played by Hoa Xuande. Sandra Oh also stars in the series. Downey Jr. plays four different characters who are against Captain.
The show is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. It’s about Captain, who is a spy for North Vietnam but has to flee to the U.S. with his boss at the end of the war. In America, he still reports to the Viet Cong while dealing with his loyalty issues.
After winning an Oscar, Downey Jr. talked about his role in the show. He hinted that there are more surprises to come.
The series has seven parts and was filmed in 2022 and 2023. During filming, Downey Jr. posted a video on Instagram showing his kids shaving his head for the role. He also had bleached eyebrows and red curly hair for the part.
