Photos of Extreme Houses from Around the World

A house is a place where we feel comfortable and safe, isn’t it? However, some architects and builders have decided to challenge this notion by constructing buildings that defy many human fears. Looking at these houses, you can confidently say that their creators have a strong imagination (and probably a sense of humor). Let’s take a look at photos of these unusual architectural wonders and listen to our inner feelings. Are you scared?

House on the Drina River in Serbia

This amazing wooden house was built in 1968 by a group of local residents who would occasionally move from one bank of the Drina River to the other. Over the years, their miraculous creation was washed away seven times. However, after 2011, nature showed some mercy and stopped constantly destroying the house. Today, it is a landmark of Serbia.

The Temple on the Katskhi Pillar, Georgia

The limestone monolith reaches a height of 40 meters. Climbing it is probably quite an adventure.

Takasugi-an Teahouse, Japan

This teahouse is built on top of two chestnut trees. You can only access it via separate stairs attached to one of the trees. As you might have already guessed, this architectural marvel is used exclusively for solitary tea-drinking.

Xuan Kong Si Temple Complex, China

Hub Island, USA

Back in the 1950s, the Sizelands, an American family, acquired a rather controversial piece of land to build their dream home. There’s a very small area around the structure that gets completely submerged during high tide. It’s hard to say if this is a suitable place for a happy life.

Lichtenstein, Germany

Everything looks quite cute if you don’t look down.

Shadowcliff, USA

The little house is definitely not for those who are afraid of heights. Although, perhaps the picturesque view of the sea compensates for everything.

WoZoCo – Amsterdam

These blocks seem securely attached to the building. But, admit it, it’s still scary to stand under or next to them.

The Phoenix House – Hawaii

This tiny guest house, designed by Will Beilharz, is perched on a lava field. It offers a view of the puffy clouds forming where molten rock flows into the sea. In the photo, you can see the solidified lava, which once came very close to the house.

Baffa di Perrero, Italy. A house that is right inside a high rock

It is believed that this house was built over 100 years ago.

Caravai Tribe Houses, Papua New Guinea

Members of the tribe don’t live in regular houses but in real “birdhouses.” These dwellings are constructed on treetops. The Caravai people believe that this is the only way to protect themselves from evil spirits.
